SCOTT DENNEY
As a creative producer, editor, writer, and designer, Scott Denney creates memorable and effective images for commercials, TV shows, print, and the web. He has an eclectic style, ranging from the comedic, to the dramatic, and from clever concepts, to the tastefully simple approach. This diversity is the result of his desire to tailor every project to fit the client’s message, while creating a unique look that cuts through the normally bland landscape of ‘rinse and repeat’ advertising.
Regarding his approach, Scott says, “A commercial is like a small movie. Both need to convey a story to sell something, be that an idea, or a product. In both cases, the story can be comedic, sad, dramatic, romantic, adventurous, etc, and in both cases, the same tools are used. With commercials, it’s just done on a much smaller budget and time scale. The challenge in advertising, as with film, is to discover the best way to tell the story.”
Scott finds inspiration for his ideas everywhere. “Certainly, the first inspiration comes from the client’s message, but ideas come from everywhere. They come from paintings, music, architecture, books, design, motion pictures, etc. Picasso said, ‘Good artists copy; great artists steal.’ Rembrandt taught us how to light a scene. Vignelli taught us design and layout. Mamet taught us dialogue. But ideas can also come from a simple moment that happens in the middle of a day. It’s about communication… human communication. Of course, it’s about selling a product or an idea, but in the end, it’s always about telling a story.”
